Smoke and Sports

Published by Fernando (translation: Mara) | 2008-05-02 19:53:28

When air is polluted with smoke, because of burning products or organic matter near the sport area, this turns out to be a problem, especially for sportsmen who suffer from allergy, bronchuspasm and asthma, for they may go through acute episodes of this kind.

Professionally talking, healthy people can continue training, as long as they don't have any slight pain; people with breathing difficulties should not train or else they should take some precautions, such as using a bronchodilator (albutamol, budesonide, etc.) fifteen minutes befote starting physical activity, as a prevention measure.

Regarding professional soccer, we advise to send a written notification to the corresponding entity asking for an authorization in case a player should take a medicine for the bronchus, since corticosteroids and salbutamol, among others drugs, are forbidden and considered as a positive doping case in sport federations.

At school, we advise not to do any physical activity, as it was once said, and to cancel sport competitions if it were necessary.
With reference to smoke, we can state that, though it contains a certain amount of carbon monoxide, it is not toxic.
